Crocodiles
Crocodiles - After a prolonged hiatus, Crocodiles finally reconvened at Quiksilver Studios in St. Jean de Luz, France in the fall of 2021 to get their new album Upside Down In Heaven down on tape. Maxime Smadja (Rixe, Boss) was entrusted with production duties and brought his signature greasy sheen to the proceedings. Joining the party were Atef Aouadhi and Diego Dal Bon on bass and drums. In typical Crocodilian fashion, the album zig-zags cohesively from one style to the next. There are straight-up punk-pop anthems (Love Beyond The Grave), mutant garage-rock (Surfing With Death), infectious fuzz-pop (Forever Walk Alone), dance-floor ready bangers (Deadbeat) and even hardcore death-rock (Rock & Roll Graveyard). The songs are direct, cut to the chase and leave listeners thirsting for more.
Francis Pig - Brutal and raw, with a poetic cool, Francis Pig are a 5 piece art punk band based in Brighton/London. With erotic themes and motorik momentum, their sound is driving and bursting with desire and tension. Their dynamic live show has gained them a growing cult following around the country this year off the back of their UK tour supporting Demob Happy. They've shared stages with L.A Witch, Automatic and Lydia Lunch and have been praised by Wire frontman Colin Newman for doing something 'no one else is doing' on the scene. Punk in Focus says the band have 'echoes of the Cramps, The Stooges and The velvet Underground'.
Be Kind Cadaver - Be Kind Cadaver are a post-punk band - if ‘post-punk’ means drawing on contemporary Ugandan rhythms as much as Duster-inspired slow-core, Jesus Lizard era noise rock as much as experimental modular electronics. Throw in some psyche improv, a dose of performance art and a big pop chorus, front the whole thing with a mildly angry Scott Walker and you might be close.
A five piece formed of visual artist Leroy (guitars, percussion) and experimental composer Distant Animals (vocals, synthesis, percussion), alongside Sara, John and Oliver, the band draw upon a shared love of conceptual art, approaching the music as more an exploration of sound as a social process than a set genre or form. And if all that sounds pretentious, it probably is – their practices steeped in academic terms such as ‘cross medial interrogation’ and ‘critical emergence’, which they can just about get away with as one of them is an actual doctor.
